Choosing door hardware is far more complex than most people realise. Your builder might have told you to "go and buy some handles", but it's not a matter of simply choosing a handle you like the look of.

From how it needs to function (latch, lock or privacy) and the specifications of the door, to proportions, finishes, and period suitability, you need a lot of information to avoid mistakes when ordering. You may also have sliding or French doors. These need different types of hardware, and there are lots of details you'll need to know in order to make the right decisions.
