After nearly two decades helping homeowners choose door hardware, I can tell you this is where many people get stuck. What seems like a simple decision quickly becomes more involved once you consider door design, stile width, thickness, and how each door needs to function.
It’s also where costly mistakes are often made, choosing hardware that doesn’t suit the style or era of the home, or doesn’t work as intended once installed.
If you’d like guidance before you decide, start with a short quiz so I can understand your doors and guide your initial decisions:

From there if you’d like more detailed support, I offer a paid service where I work with you to select the right hardware for each door including handles, locks, latches and hinges and prepare a considered, complete door-by-door plan.
Every recommendation is made with careful attention to period accuracy, proportions, and the architectural character of your home.
It depends on the door design, proportions, function and age of the home. Door levers are the more practical choice for doors with narrow stiles, where a knob may sit too close to the frame and be uncomfortable to use (no one wants to be knocking their knuckles!). For period homes, the choice also needs to be considered carefully so the hardware suits the door design and architectural style.
Not necessarily. The size and position of existing holes, stile width and whether the doors are painted all need to be considered. This is where many people come unstuck. For example, if you have a 54mm hole in the door, unless you can patch the hole and start again (one of the advantages of a painted door), a lot of handles won't be suitable as they won't cover the existing hole. Ultimately, there's almost always a solution, but you may need extra help to find it.
Handles are only one part of the picture. You’ll also need to consider latches, locks and hinges, all of which need to work together properly.
Consistency in finish and style is important, but it also needs to suit each door function. Bedrooms, bathrooms and external doors all require different hardware.
